The Brief – Virtual Tour and Google Maps Tour

The team at Goodspace approached us to create a practical and feature-rich 360 virtual tour for their Rouse Hill location with specifics in mind. First, they wanted a practical automatic self-guiding navigation feature that shows people how to enter their facility from the outside right into the complex from multiple directions. It can be challenging for people who have never been there, considering it is underground in a vast, expansive space. But by creating this system, people can easily find and navigate to the entry.

The Goodspace team also wanted to show the sizing dimensions of their various storage lockers. It is one thing to say that the space is 2m x 2m, but seeing the storage locker with overlayed dimensions helps the customer experience the space and understand its size practically without having to be there in person. Finally, all this had to be achieved while also being on brand. The virtual tour also has an integrated VR functionality and social sharing capability, all while wanting the option to host the tour themselves. In addition, the team also decided to upload this tour to Google Maps to help improve their Maps SEO presence.

What We Loved About This Project

While each virtual tour we create has unique challenges, and we love a challenge, the virtual tour created for Goodspace Rouse Hill is no exception and was one of the most technically challenging we have ever produced. There were two main challenges to overcome. The main challenge was the environment and the very high level of network interference. While ensuring robustness, the facility’s thick and sturdy cement walls, floors, and ceilings also posed obstacles for wireless signals. These construction materials and metal storage lockers created an environment where connectivity struggled to penetrate.

On a technical level, cement degrades wireless signals due to its high density. When these thick cement walls, floors, or ceilings are present, they act as formidable barriers, hindering the propagation of radio waves. The dense material absorbs and weakens the signal, reducing connectivity within the affected area. Additionally, metal storage lockers exacerbate the issue. Being conductive, they reflect and scatter wireless signals, disrupting communication further. The metal surfaces act as mirrors for radio waves, bouncing them unpredictably and causing interference in the surrounding environment. In short, we could not establish a stable connection with our equipment long enough to take a photo, especially at 8K resolution.

Please note that Goodspace Rouse Hill does have complimentary stable wifi but not for the requirements for the shoot. After experimenting with multiple 360 cameras and techniques, we upgraded our equipment for more intense and rugged environments (high signal interference, broader temperature conditions) while providing a much longer transmission range. Please note that we have also shot tours underground, in over 40 Celsius / 105 Fahrenheit in 90%+ humidity, in remote and other unique environments. Our upgraded specialised 360 equipment allows us to reach even more challenging locations.

The second challenge was the efficiency of the Goodspace automated system, which could not be changed during the shoot. Usually, a person would drive in and walk to their storage locker, and as they walk through the space, the lights turn on/off accordingly. This is great for efficiency and the environment; however, the storage lights turned off before the shot could be taken. Working with the team at Goodspace, we worked out a way to photograph each location, minimising our presence and editing ourselves out in post. While we love a technical challenge, we especially love how everything came together for the final product.
