The Brief – Virtual Tour and Google Maps Tour
When the archivist team at Barker College contacted us, they had a unique request. They wanted to make their school more interactive and engaging by having an interactive and historical experience for their year seven students. The experience is to showcase all the history within all the aspects of the Chapel in a self-paced experience. This way, the students can explore the Chapel independently and learn more about the school. This was done by uploading the 360 photos we created and overlaying them with hotspots of the history.
In addition to this, the archivist team wanted to update some of their imagery, specifically the corbels in the Chapel. If you look at the example shot from the tour, you will notice the crests high up along the ceiling line. The school had images of the crests, but they were estimated to be at least 30+ years old, and they wanted high-resolution professional DSLR shots of these.
Fun Fact: In architecture, a corbel is a bracket-like piece of material that juts from a wall to support an overhanging weight.
What We Loved About This Project
We have worked with multiple organisations for historical and heritage significance. Photographing this location is an honour because it allows us to help be a part of the history by digitising and preserving it for future generations. This 360 photography shoot was unique because it was a 2 phase process.
Firstly, when it came to 360 photography, additional time and care went into capturing the Barker College Chapel. To ensure the Chapel looked its best while having each 360 image positioned strategically and in a meaningful way so that as much of the Chapel could be captured, it was also edited to ensure each hotspot area was visually noticeable while not taking away from the Chapel.
The project’s second phase involved the traditional photo shoot for the corbels. Our experienced photographer arrived with all the necessary equipment and prepared the scene for the shoot. He used a variety of techniques, such as lighting, angles, and filters, to capture the beauty and detail of each and every one of the corbels. He ensured that every corbel was in focus and clearly contrasted with the background.
About The Client
Barker College is an independent Anglican co-educational school that provides early learning and primary and secondary education to day students and boarders. It is situated in Hornsby, a North Shore suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The school was founded in 1890 by Rev. Henry Plume at Kurrajong Heights. In 2016, Barker College announced its decision to become a fully co-educational school, starting with the admission of girls in early learning and Kindergarten in 2018, followed by girls in Year 3 in 2019 and finally in Year 7 in 2020. The school also has boarding facilities.
The school believes in educating young people in the Christian faith to instil in them the capacity, knowledge, and insight they need to inspire real change. By providing diverse opportunities and experiences, students can develop resilience and adaptability within a supportive environment. All Barker students are unique individuals with different strengths and abilities, but they share a common trait – the confidence to embrace the challenges of the future and make a positive impact on the world.
