Koalas are not bears but are actually marsupials. They were initially called bears because, in the late 1700s, English settler came across these small, grey bear looking creatures which also have pouches. They were given the scientific name Phascolarctos Cinereus which means "ash-grey pouched bear". As a result, the name stuck and are known as Koala Bears.
Additionally, Koalas only weight weighs 4–15 kg (9–33 lb) and have a body length of 60–85 cm (24–33 in). They are in no way anything like a bear… maybe a cute, cuddly teddy bear… with claws.

Barbie: barbeque
Chockers: full
Esky: a cooler to keep your food/drinks cols
Mozzie: mosquito

One of the biggest culture shocks is that Australians do not say ‘shrimp’; we actually say prawns. This all started back in 1984 when actor Paul Hogan (famous for the Crocodile Dundee movies in the 1980s) said the phrase “throw another shrimp on the barbie”. Hired by Tourism Australia to attract Americans to the great ‘Down Under’.
Fun Fact: this campaign was so successful that Australia went from number 78 on the US dream vacation list to constantly be in the top two spots for the next 20 years.

While Kangaroos are the world's largest marsupials, Australian's do not ride in them as some might think. For example, the largest species of Kangaroo is the Red Kangaroo and are only 1.5m (4.9 ft) tall or 2.1 m (6.9 ft) tall when they stand upright. While it would be fun to ride in their pouch, we would be too big for them, and the baby kangaroo's (joeys) would not appreciate it.

Despite popular belief, most Australian's do not live in the Outback. Approximately 60,000 people live in this part of the country. Putting this into perspective, there are 25 million Australians which means only 0.24% of Australian's live in the Outback.
It is easy to see why so many people think we do as it makes up 70% of the Australian continent or 5.6 million square km (2.2 square miles). In some areas of the Outback, temperatures can reach up to 50C (122 Fahrenheit).

While Sydney is the largest city in Australia, it is not the capital of Australia; it is Canberra. Aside from Sydney, Melbourne is also thought to be the capital by many as well.
This myth started for a couple of reasons. Firstly Sydney and Melbourne are Australia's largest cities and popular tourist destinations. Both Melbourne and Sydney were fighting to become the Capital City of Australia. It was decided that Canberra become the capital as it was inland and away from harm on the coastline.

While Fosters is a brand of beer you can buy/drink in Australia, it is not as popular with Australians as many perceive it. Many Australians have not even tried it, and not sold in many bar/clubs. Originally created by two American brothers who sailed to Melbourne, Australia and began brewing Foster's Larger in 1888. In fact, Asahi Breweries is the parent company of Fosters, which is based in Japan. One can say it is a truly international beer.

While it is true that Australia is home to some of the deadliest animals in the world, not every animal is dangerous. Animals such as the Box Jellyfish, Saltwater Crocodile and the Sydney Funnelwebs are rated some of the worlds deadliest animals.
We also have some other deadly animals such as the redback spider, brown snake (it's brown), tiger snake, the great white shark and perhaps the most deadly of all, the Drop Bear.
